Burnside & Associates Limited and Neegan Burnside Ltd. have committed to a broader regional business strategy, based out of Winnipeg and Thunder Bay, serving a diverse range of municipal, Indigenous and private sector clients.  As a component of this strategy, we have an exciting opportunity based out of our Winnipeg office for a Surveyor / Civil Engineering Technologist to join our Manitoba / Northwest Ontario Regional Team.

Role Specifics

The position will be primarily focused on completing topographic surveys but will also involve working as a part of a team collaborating with Professional Engineers and other technical staff on a variety of civil engineering related projects.

More specifically, the position will involve carrying out the following tasks:

  • Utilize Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and other survey equipment to conduct accurate topographic, boundary, staking, quantity, layout, grades, drainage and construction surveys.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate field notes, records, photographs, and sketches in accordance with project requirements and company standards.
  • Utilize AutoCAD Civil 3D to design and produce functional, preliminary, and detailed design drawings for a wide variety of civil projects.
  • Assist in the production of detailed engineering drawings, including plan/profile and section drawings and the preparation of tender packages.
  • Proactively advance design techniques and procedures to support designers, project managers and technicians.
  • Assist with the preparation of cost estimates, construction quantities, tender documents, etc.
  • Complete construction review and inspection and document As-Built construction conditions in accordance with project requirements and company standards.
  • Assist with contract administration assistance including the review of shop drawings, monthly payment certificate requests, respond to requests for information (RFIs), prepare contract change orders, deficiency reviews, and other related contract administration paperwork.
  • Other tasks as assigned.

Professional Knowledge, Skills & Qualifications

The following qualifications, experience and skills are required:

  • Diploma/Certificate in Civil Engineering Technology or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience will be considered.
  • Minimum of 2 years of survey experience.
  • Knowledge of industry standards and best practices.
  • Topographical Survey experience using GPS equipment
  • Experience with survey grade drones and photogrammetry will be considered an asset but not required.
  • Work related AutoCAD experience (Civil 3D will be considered an asset).
  • Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks.
  • The ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
  • Effective communication skills (written/verbal).
  • Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft 365 and related Office Suite of programs (i.e., Word, Excel, SharePoint, etc.) AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and portable document format (PDF) editing software.
  • Exceptional commitment to customer service with a strong sense of urgency.
  • Strong attention to detail with high ethical standards.
  • Valid driver’s license.
