About the NORC Innovation Centre

The NORC Innovation Centre is a first-of-its-kind initiative at UHN advancing new models of social connection and accessible care for aging adults living in naturally occurring retirement communities (NORCs). Our mission is to develop community-led solutions that provide options for aging in place with dignity and choice. This work is led by a multidisciplinary team at UHN OpenLab and Connected Care, drawing on a range of design, clinical, and innovation expertise.

Job Description

Reports to: Program Manager
Site: NORC Innovation Centre Office
Status: 1-Year Contract (with possibility of extension, contingent on funding)
Hours: 37.5 per week
Salary: $34.32 – $42.90/hour
Shifts: Primarily Monday to Friday, with occasional evening or weekend work based on program needs
Closing Date: April 18, 2025

Position Summary:

We are seeking a thoughtful and curious User Experience Designer to support the design and rollout of digital platforms that enhance the way NORC teams collaborate, gather data, and connect residents with health and social care services.

In this entry-to-mid level role, you'll be central to designing, testing, and improving tools like the NORC Team Portal—a digital backbone for integrated care. You'll also support broader design activities, such as journey mapping and service prototyping alongside older adults, front-line staff, and community partners.

You’ll be part of a collaborative team working on complex, meaningful challenges. If you're excited by human-centered design, passionate about inclusive digital experiences, and want to help build systems that reflect the realities of aging in community, we'd love to meet you.

Duties:

 

User Research & Experience Mapping

  • Conduct user research, including interviews, usability tests, co-creation sessions, and feedback collection
  • Analyze feedback and usage data to generate insights and iterate on solutions
  • Contribute to journey mapping and service blueprints to inform model enhancements

Digital Product Design & Prototyping

  • Support the design, testing, and continuous improvement of the NORC Team Portal, with a focus on usability and functionality for internal teams
  • Assist with the redesign of the NORC Innovation Centre products (e.g. website) to improve clarity, accessibility, and engagement as a resource hub
  • Translate research findings into clear visual artifacts (wireframes, prototypes, mockups) that support shared understanding

Implementation & Support

  • Develop onboarding and support materials to aid adoption of new tools and processes
  • Build and manage a digital library of tools, templates, and learning materials

Collaboration & Visual Communication

  • Work closely with project leads, front-line staff, and other designers to ensure alignment between user needs and digital tools
  • Support visual communication needs by creating or enhancing layouts for program materials such as posters, brochures, and presentation decks

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in User Experience Design, Human-Computer Interaction, Human Factors, or a related discipline
  • 1–3 years of relevant experience
  • Foundational knowledge of UX research methods, accessibility, and inclusive design
  • Experience with Microsoft Power Apps and Power Automate
  • Experience with design tools (e.g. Adobe Suite, Figma, Adobe XD, Miro)
  • Basic graphic design capabilities to support visual communication needs across program materials a strong asset
  • Ability to synthesize qualitative and quantitative input into clear recommendations
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and time management skills
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot technical issues and implement effective solutions
  • Strong aptitude for translating complex technical concepts into clear, accessible language
  • Experience or interest in health, aging, or community-based work is a plus
