Co-op students function as embedded team members and directly contribute to ongoing projects and emerging digital initiatives. These projects may include efforts to improve routine business processes, develop standardized reporting tools, create new digital platforms, engineer databases and data pipelines, integrate cloud technology and applications, build microservices and apps, develop web sites with full-stack tools, redesign back-end legacy systems, create dashboards and analytic reports, manage networking and infrastructure, research new innovative technologies, and support other ongoing IT initiatives.

Role Description

This position is for an application developer: co-op who will work as part of a team responsible for developing new systems and enhancing existing solutions. These systems support the needs of underwriters and operations personnel. This position requires the ability to participate in the development of project components. You will be part of a development team and will be supported by other developers and delivery leads.
The application developer will be involved throughout the development lifecycle, through requirements analysis, coding, unit testing, system testing and packaging.

Key Responsibilities:
• Complete assigned development and analysis tasks
• Report to assigned lead on development regarding status, risks and issues
• Participate in status and team meetings
• Complete all mandatory training
• Participate in any cross-team co-op activities with other students

You may also be required to take on additional duties, responsibilities and activities appropriate to the nature of this role.

Qualifications

We do not expect you to be an expert in IT or in the insurance industry. Your technical ability with IT is a consideration for your placement and will qualify you for a variety of projects, but it is more important to us that you come with a willingness to learn and a pro-active attitude!

• Currently enrolled in a recognized post-secondary program with a focus on Application Development
• Eligible for a Co-op work term
• Experience with computational methods and technologies
• Experience with one of the technologies (.Net and C# / JAVA / Azure Development)
• Experience with web application and/or API development
• Familiarity with SQL and No-sql databases including the writing of queries
• Strong problem-solving skills and ability to break down complex problems and provide solutions
• Excellent verbal and written communication
• Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment

Please note that in this role you will be expected to be in the office 5 days a week.
