Senior Counsel – In-House Legal Team for Leading Residential Developer/Builder

About the Role:
As Senior Counsel, you will report directly to the SVP, General Counsel, and be a pivotal member of our legal team. This role offers a unique blend of in-house legal support with hands-on experience across a variety of legal proceedings, including appearances in Superior Court, the Ontario Land Tribunal, private arbitration, small claims, and the Landlord and Tenant Board.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead and Manage Legal Proceedings:
- Represent the company in Superior Court, Ontario Land Tribunal, private arbitration, and other legal forums.
- Oversee and manage litigation strategies to effectively handle complex legal disputes.
Legal Counsel and Advisory:
- Provide expert legal advice on condominium applications, registrations, and other property-related legal matters.
- Counsel internal stakeholders on legal risks, compliance issues, and regulatory developments that impact the business.
Drafting and Negotiation:
- Draft, review, and negotiate municipal agreements (e.g., site plans, development agreements) and private contracts to ensure alignment with company objectives.
- Collaborate with external counsel, municipal authorities, and other stakeholders to secure favorable outcomes.
Strategic Planning and Compliance:
- Offer strategic advice on a broad range of legal issues related to municipal development projects, including low-rise, mid-rise, and commercial developments.
- Ensure all legal documentation and processes are in compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
Requirements
Qualifications:
Experience:
- A minimum of 5+ years in civil litigation, administrative law, and municipal matters.
- Proven track record of handling complex legal proceedings and high-stakes negotiations.
Expertise:
- Extensive experience with drafting and reviewing legal documents, including contracts and municipal agreements.
- Prior experience with Superior Court proceedings is highly desirable.
Skills:
- Exceptional communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills.
- Strong analytical abilities, with the capacity to provide sound legal advice under tight deadlines.
- Ability to work independently while also thriving in a collaborative team environment.
